Small Remake Posings

I have the remake of "The Blob" on my TV screen* at this juncture in time and space, and that depresses me to no end. I'd hoped to avoid it for the rest of my natural life. And yet there it is. How nice.

Anywho, it got me thinking of remakes, and how that, while movie fans complain about them, there are quite a few of them that are actually equal to or even superior to the original:
  • "The Maltese Falcon" follows the rather objectionable "Satan Met a Lady." (The former is one of the most faithful adaptations I have ever seen. The latter... isn't.)
  • Another John Huston flick, "Moby Dick", bests it's pedesecssor, which ended with Ahab getting both whale and the girl. Yeah. Kind of makes you think, doesn't it?
  • John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a worthy one, but not really better than the Hawks Version.
  • James Whale's "Frankenstien" is another excellent remake, though in fairness the original Frankenstien was a one reeler as I recall.
  • Most of the early Hammer films ("Horror of Dracula", "Curse of Frankenstien", "The Mummy") beat the Universal films that come before them.

Just thoughts that entered my head. Better than watching "The Blob"
