As I try to regain my footing writing-wise, I decided to cut myself a little slack and post a bit of art that I've doodled. At left is our first subject, that of the Disney Character Goofy. Unlike a lot of the pictures I've posted up here, I've done very little to it by way of Jasc. A little cleaning up of the lines, but that's it. My fear was, I do more than that and it would look like it was from a Disney caliber artist, and I'm really not there yet. Though the thought that I'm heading that way does make me a little giddy.
I hated the hat while I drew it, but with a little distance I can see it's the best thing about the picture. Nailed it, by God. Everything else is a touch off. Specifically the eyes and the ears, but the whole thing is a wee bit wrong.
Having said that I must confess that I ADORE this picture. Part of it was because of how I could "see" the various shapes I would need, but more because later the same night I did a second sketch of similar quality. I don't do that often enough, as far as I'm concerned.
The next few days, we will look at some more Cullenish works. Specifically my sketches of three characters from the movie the Dark Crystal, as well as one or two of my own devising.

It's a good likeness. I was never much of a Goofy fan--Characters whose charm comes from Stupidity is, for me, a pretty short list. Curly Howard, Bevais and Butt-Head pretty much fill that roster.
Did you know that Goofy's last name was Geef? It's true--Lileks said so.
"Bevais" is, of course, Beavis' French cousin.
(Damn fingers....)
Y'know, I find Goofy more innocent than stupid. All three of the Disney Big Guns (even Mickey) have been known to do stupid things on occasions.
On the Beavis and Butthead front... God, do I hate those two. I only watched the show to see bodily harm come to the two. "Not me, the cow! The cow!" is my favorite quote from that series...
You're right, Goofy is more innocent--perhaps naive is a better word--than stupid. He does have his charm, though, and your sketch brings that out. He definitely has a never-say-die attitude that is admirable. I certainly don't mean to belittle his character!
As for B & BH, well, no man can say why he laughs at what he laughs at, other than, "I find this amusing." I would never, never defend B & BH; I, too, find their humiliations more humorous than their triumphs (a ratio of about 90/10). As James Bowman has said, they raise stupidity to a zen art.
I suppose they fall under the category of "guilty pleasure" (a term I don't quite get).
We all know the last battle of the sexes will be fought because men will want a statue of Curly Howard somewhere, and women will scowl and put their hands on their hips.
