Charles L. Grant

On the same day my Grandfather died, so too went Dark Fantasy writer Charles Grant. His works of Quiet Horror include The Hour of the Oxrun Dead, The Pet, Jackals, and Something Stirs. He also edited the anthology series Shadows, which is one of the best Horror anthologies out there.

I wasn't the biggest fan of his short stories. I owned an anthology of his short stories (the title of which escapes me) which I ended up selling, a rarety for me. I noticed a certain pattern in every story and it ruined the collection for me.

This, of course, shouldn't be taken as a utter condemnation of his short stories. He has some outstanding works. My beef is a Cullen beef, and thus can be safely ignored.

His novels were, on the whole, excellent. Jackals is one of the better Werewolf type novels out there (right up there with David Morell's Totem.)

I think I read one of his stories--it took place in Oxrun, I'm fairly sure--about people trapped in a haunted movie theatre. I'm afraid I recall not being very impressed...though the prose was certainly vigorous enough (and I've read far worse).
